Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Reaccredited as Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence

March 19, 2014 – Englewood Hospital and Medical Center recently achieved re-accreditation as an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.

The ASMBS and American College of Surgeons (ACS) have also given EHMC’s bariatric (weight loss) surgery program full accreditation in the new, unified Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This designation is reserved for bariatric surgery programs that have demonstrated a history of successful patient outcomes.

“In June 2013, the AMA recognized obesity as a disease,” said Christine Rohan, MS, RN, ANP, FNP-BC, Bariatric Coordinator at EHMC. “For those who suffer with obesity, weight loss surgery is one of the most reliable ways to lose weight. It has the added benefit of resolving Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and a variety of other health issues. Quality, as evidenced by our reaccreditation, experience, understanding, and caring make EHMC one of the top providers of bariatric services in Bergen County.”

EHMC is proud to offer free, year-round educational seminars on weight loss surgery. The seminars are open to anyone who would like to learn more about a surgical option for weight loss.

Seminar topics include a review of the preparation for surgical weight loss, the risks and benefits of each type of surgery, and what to expect after surgery. General information about insurance coverage will also be presented. The goal is to educate attendees on all aspects of bariatric surgery so that each person is better informed to decide whether bariatric surgery is an appropriate weight loss option.

“I am thrilled that EHMC has received its reaccreditation as an ASMBS Bariatric Center of Excellence. EHMC has been continuously accredited since 2009,” said Rohan. “Each year, our total number of surgeries increases. This is a result of a multidisciplinary team’s dedication to the ideals of comprehensive care. The care is tailored to the specific needs of each individual patient. The surgeons and the hospital personnel form a bond that does not end with discharge after surgery. It is a lifelong commitment to caring and follow-up.”
