Breast Surgeon Julia M. DiGioia, MD, Joins Englewood Health as Regional Director of Breast Surgical Oncology for Hudson County

July 14, 2020 — Englewood Health has named breast surgeon Julia M. DiGioia, MD its regional director of breast surgical oncology for Hudson County. Based in Jersey City, she will lead and assist with several breast cancer care initiatives for The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center and The Lefcourt Family Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center at Englewood Health, including overseeing a multidisciplinary breast program in Jersey City focused on breast cancer diagnostic services and extensive ancillary programs for patients in Hudson County.

For two decades, Dr. DiGioia has been recognized as a leading specialist in the multidisciplinary approach to, and the delivery of, compassionate, high-quality breast cancer treatment in Hudson County. She specializes in benign and malignant diseases of the breast and performs breast biopsies, lumpectomies, mastectomies, and oncoplastic breast reconstruction. Dr. DiGioia is board certified in surgery. 

In her previous role at Jersey City Medical Center, she organized the cancer center’s tumor board for breast cancer, evaluating hundreds of patients each year. Together with her husband, Stephen Hall, MD, Dr. DiGioia has developed a unique oncoplastic practice of breast surgery that delivers optimal surgical care in a personal and compassionate setting. 

According to the New Jersey Department of Health, breast cancer is the second leading cause of deaths due to cancer among women in New Jersey, taking about 1,300 lives every year. 

“The addition of Dr. DiGioia to the Englewood Health team introduces an unprecedented level of personalized commitment to the care of breast cancer patients in Hudson County,” said Steven Brower, MD, medical director of The Lefcourt Family Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center at Englewood Health. “She has been a recognized cancer leader with many ties to the professional community, assuring the same level of top-tier care as offered within the breast center at our main campus in Englewood. As a highly respected leader in the region, she will work closely with our medical director of oncology in Hudson County and other oncologists, and will be an integral part of our health system moving forward.”

Born and raised in Jersey City, and a graduate of St. Peter’s University, Dr. DiGioia received her medical degree from Sapienza University of Rome and then completed her residency at Jersey City Medical Center/UMDNJ. She has been recognized as a Top Doctor in New York Magazine, Jersey’s Best Magazine, and the Top Doctors: New York Metro Area book series and digital guide. Dr. DiGioia has contributed to multiple publications, is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, served as the medical director of the Cristie Kerr Women’s Health Center, an advisor to the American Cancer Foundation, and was chair of the 2017 Susan B. Komen NJ Race for the Cure. Dr. DiGioia speaks English, Spanish, and Italian.
