April 14, 2015 — Hackensack University Health Network (HackensackUHN) and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center (EHMC) have entered into a new clinical and academic affiliation, announcing their first five major initiatives to benefit New Jersey communities in Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Passaic Counties, as well as Rockland County, New York, and beyond.
The affiliation will allow both health systems to expand patient care services and develop new collaborative programs throughout the region.
Under the agreement, EHMC and HackensackUHN will remain independent healthcare providers and will continue to be responsible for their individual finances and operations, including their boards, administration, physicians and employees. The new collaboration will enable EHMC and HackensackUHN to enhance access to a variety of patient care services and to develop population health management programs for the benefit of the communities they serve. The clinical partnership will create regional models of care with an emphasis on difficult-to-access services targeting multicultural communities, preventive medicine and early intervention.
EHMC will become a member of the Hackensack University Health Network, which will enable EHMC to cost-effectively implement an upgrade of information technology systems, including its EMR, supporting the population health collaborative. Membership will also connect EHMC with a growing consortium of hospitals and hospital networks in New Jersey and Pennsylvania,
including HackensackUHN, with opportunities to offer services at a significantly lower cost and to participate in the adoption and dissemination of clinical best practices throughout the Northeast.
In January 2015, HackensackUHN and Seton Hall University announced plans to establish a new school of medicine, based at the state-of-the-art campus of the former Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. biomedical facility in Nutley, New Jersey. Through the affiliation, the parties anticipate that EHMC will serve as a major teaching site for the HackensackUHN/SHU medical school and its graduate medical education programs. EHMC’s internal medicine residency training program will expand into other HackensackUHN sites, and EHMC will have the opportunity to participate in the training of HackensackUHN/SHU residents in a variety of specialties, including surgery and emergency medicine. EHMC will also serve as a clinical training site for a variety of allied health students, such as advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and clinical technologists.
In an early clinical alliance, EHMC and HackensackUHN have agreed to create a regional cardiac surgery program, anticipated to become one of the largest such programs in northern New Jersey, and serving as a national model for collaborative care. Both systems already boast award-winning heart surgery outcomes that rival any in the tri-state area. The combined service will further drive outstanding quality as well as improved access to cardiac surgical services for patients in the region.
“Hackensack University Health Network is pleased to partner with Englewood Hospital and Medical Center,” said Robert C. Garrett, president and chief executive officer of HackensackUHN. “Today’s healthcare model places emphasis on collaboration. Through this affiliation, we will be able to share resources and best practices in order to better serve the patients of our entire region. This is about delivering value to the patients we serve, which means the highest quality at the most appropriate cost and developing a vast array of new non-hospital services to conveniently serve area communities.”
“Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is proud of our 125-year history of serving our communities of Bergen County and beyond,” said Warren Geller, president and chief executive officer of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. “We are driven by our mission to provide the highest quality, advanced care in a humanistic setting, right here at home. We continue to invest in our community’s future, as evidenced by the construction of our new comprehensive cancer center. Our numerous national quality and patient-safety awards are a testament to the commitment of our boards, our medical and nursing staff and our employees. We are thrilled to begin a new era in partnership with the Hackensack University Health Network to improve access to the highest quality care, advance medical education and develop new programs to optimize the health of our patients and their families.”
