Patient education is an important component of every treatment plan to help promote long-term recovery, prevent complications, enhance overall well-being, and improve quality of life. Your active participation plays a significant role in successful wound healing.

To promote effective healing:

  • Increase your protein intake and/or supplement your diet with protein powder
  • Take daily multivitamins with zinc and vitamin C
  • Stay hydrated
  • Quit smoking
  • Manage your blood sugar level (for diabetic patients)
  • Avoid pressure and friction on wounds
  • Wear specially prescribed shoes or boots
  • Elevate your legs to prevent swelling
  • Wear compression stockings as advised
  • Monitor wounds for signs and symptoms of infection

To monitor for infection, let your doctor know if you are experiencing:

  • Pus drainage
  • Redness around the wound
  • Unusual odor
  • Uncontrollable pain
  • Fever over 100.5°
  • Chills
  • Generalized weakness
