Policy and Procedure Manual – Human Resources
Adverse Weather Policy No. 10.0
In adverse weather situations, Englewood Hospital must continue to provide care to our patients and be available for emergency services to the community. It is therefore the obligation of Hospital staff to report to work as scheduled. When severe weather conditions are predicted, employees are expected to allow for extended travel time and leave for work earlier than normal. When difficulties are encountered because of adverse weather conditions, the following guidelines should be followed.
Employees that have previously established remote access to work from home, may request approval to work from home on the adverse weather day. To request approval to work from home for a scheduled shift, the employee must contact their manager or director no later than one hour prior to the start of their shift.
In any serious storm or poor weather condition, reasonable lateness may be excused when employees have made best efforts to report to work on time.
Barring extraordinary circumstances, employees who are not able to report to work as scheduled (on site or remote) will not be paid or permitted to utilize accrued vacation or holiday time. Payment of vacation or holiday time will require administrative review by the appropriate Vice President in conjunction with an overall review by the Sr. Vice President, Human Resources.
In order to be eligible for sick leave pay an employee will be required to provide proof of illness including a physician’s note, which will be reviewed by their Department Head.
No individual department can elect to close services until they have been authorized to do so by the President & CEO of Englewood Health or his/her designee. In the event that adverse weather conditions develop during the 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM business day, the President & CEO of Englewood Health or his/her designee will decide if weather conditions are so severe as to warrant an early release of non-essential staff. Vice Presidents will be notified by Human Resources if a decision to allow staff to be released is made and they in turn will inform their Department Heads. Each Department Head has the authority to release an individual employee prior to such a decision due to extraordinary circumstances, however the impact of such decision should be kept in mind at all times. Those employees who are authorized to leave early (prior to the hospital-wide release authorized by the President or his designee) must use accrued vacation or holiday leave to cover the balance of the workday.
