Englewood Hospital Earns Highest Designation from PERT Consortium for Pulmonary Embolism Care

First in New Jersey and New York Metropolitan Area to Be Named a Comprehensive Care Center PE Center of Excellence

June 23, 2026 — Englewood Hospital has earned the highest designation awarded by the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) Consortium, becoming the first hospital in New Jersey and the New York metropolitan region to be named a Comprehensive Care Center PE Center of Excellence™.

The designation follows a rigorous, multi-phase review process that included an extensive evaluation of the hospital’s multidisciplinary pulmonary embolism (PE) program, patient outcomes, clinical protocols, and case reviews. Hospitals seeking the designation undergo a comprehensive assessment of their ability to provide coordinated, evidence-based care for patients with pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening condition caused by a blood clot in the lungs.

With this recognition, Englewood Hospital is now:

  • The first PE Center of Excellence in New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area.
  • One of only 16 Comprehensive Care Center PE Centers of Excellence nationwide.

The designation places Englewood Hospital among a select group of nationally recognized institutions, including Yale, UCLA, and the University of Chicago.

“To stand alongside some of the most respected medical institutions in the country is an extraordinary achievement,” said Thomas Bernik, MD, chief of vascular surgery at Englewood Health. “More importantly, it reflects the expertise, collaboration, and commitment of our multidisciplinary team to delivering exceptional care when patients need it most."

Englewood Hospital’s Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) brings together specialists from vascular surgery, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, emergency medicine, cardiac surgery, anesthesiology, radiology, critical care, and nursing to rapidly evaluate and treat patients with pulmonary embolism. The program provides around-the-clock access to advanced diagnostics, minimally invasive interventions, surgical expertise, and coordinated follow-up care.

“This designation is a testament to the physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, administrators, and support staff who made this achievement possible,” said Hillary Cohen, MD, senior vice president and chief medical officer at Englewood Health. “Their dedication has established Englewood Hospital as a destination for advanced pulmonary embolism care and further strengthens our role as a regional referral center for patients with complex vascular disease.”
