Englewood Hospital Earns Joint Commission's Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center Certification

August 31, 2026 — Englewood Hospital has earned advanced certification as a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center from Joint Commission, an independent nonprofit that sets rigorous standards for health care quality and patient safety.

Englewood Hospital has been designated a Primary Stroke Center since 2005, reflecting more than two decades of commitment to timely, high-quality stroke care. The new certification recognizes the hospital’s expanded ability to treat some of the most serious ischemic strokes through mechanical thrombectomy, a minimally invasive procedure that removes a blood clot from a blocked vessel in the brain to restore blood flow.

“This certification reflects the strength of the stroke program we have built at Englewood Hospital,” said Justin Marcus, MD, medical director of stroke at Englewood Hospital. “It recognizes the expertise, technology, and coordinated care our team brings to stroke patients every day—and our commitment to providing advanced care close to home.”

Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Centers meet rigorous standards for performing endovascular procedures and providing specialized post-procedural care, with the clinical expertise, technology, imaging, and around-the-clock capabilities needed to care for patients experiencing complex strokes.

The achievement follows continued investment in Englewood Hospital’s neurointerventional capabilities, including the acquisition of an advanced Siemens biplane imaging system. The technology provides high-resolution, real-time imaging that enables physicians to navigate the brain’s complex blood vessels and perform minimally invasive procedures with greater precision.

“With the expertise and technology now in place at Englewood Hospital, we can treat complex strokes with minimally invasive techniques that can restore blood flow when every minute counts,” said Joseph Carnevale, MD, director of endovascular stroke at Englewood Hospital. “This certification validates the advanced neurointerventional care we are providing right here in our community.”

Achieving this certification reflects the expertise and collaboration of physicians, nurses, and team members across Englewood Hospital.
