Is the program accredited?
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Englewood Hospital has been fully accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education since 1973.
Who is the institutional sponsor for the Internal Medicine Residency Program?
Englewood Hospital is academically affiliated with Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, with Graduate Medical Education sponsorship from Hackensack Meridian Health North.
What are Englewood Hospital’s clinical affiliations?
Englewood Hospital remains an independent, not-for-profit community hospital and part of Englewood Health. The leadership team at Englewood Health has recognized the importance of strategic affiliation in an era of rapid consolidation in health care and has an affiliation with the Hackensack-Meridian Health Network. This affiliation has provided Englewood Hospital with important opportunities for growth in its clinical and academic programs. For example, Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) has partnered with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), and this relationship will bring MSKCC specialists to Englewood Hospital to provide care for patients.
The affiliation with Hackensack-Meridian Health will also afford Englewood Hospital residents opportunities to apply for subspecialty fellowship programs within the network as their educational programs develop and expand.
How large is the program?
We have 13 categorical residents per postgraduate year, 3 preliminary residents, and 1 PGY4 chief resident per year.
Is there diversity in the patient population?
The patient diversity at Englewood Hospital is one of the program’s greatest strengths. The tremendous socioeconomic, ethnic and racial diversity in the communities we serve translates into an excellent learning experience for residents. The faculty’s recognized expertise in patient blood management, oncology, biliary endoscopy, interventional cardiology, infectious diseases, and other areas attracts a wide variety of patients with these conditions.
The outpatient experience also benefits from patient diversity as a broad range of patient ages, incomes, and countries of origin are represented at the North Hudson Community Action Corporation Clinic in downtown Englewood, where our residents provide primary care with an emphasis on continuity and preventive medicine.
Do you accept graduates from osteopathic medical schools?
Absolutely! We have several osteopathic physicians on staff, including our very own Program Director and welcome osteopathic graduates to apply.
Do you accept international medical graduates?
Absolutely! We are IMG friendly. All IMG applicants must obtain ECFMG certification.
What types of visa do you support?
Englewood Hospital supports the J1 visas.
Is US medical experience required?
Medical experience in the United States is not a requirement.
Will I have a mentor?
Yes, you will have the opportunity to work with both a peer mentor and a faculty advisor.
Does your program uphold duty hour requirements?
Our program strictly complies with all ACGME duty hour requirements, including:
- A work week limited to less than 80 hours
- One day off in seven (averaged over 4 weeks)
Is there a night float system?
Yes, there is a night float system in place for the PGY1, PGY2 and PGY3 residents to provide cross-coverage and admit new patients for the daytime teams between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Each year, residents will complete an average of two 2-week night float rotations.
Are there admission caps?
PGY1 admissions are capped at 5 new admissions and 2 transfers within a 24-hour period. The program complies with all caps as written in the ACGME internal medicine program requirements.
How much elective time is there in each year?
- PGY1: While on average, 3 months elective time is allotted to preliminary interns, categorical interns spend 2 weeks on a Palliative Care selective, 2 weeks on a Bioskills/Transitions of Care selective and 2 weeks in an elective of their choice.
- PGY2: 3 months
- PGY3: 2.5 months
Are you required to stay at Englewood for elective rotations?
No, during the preliminary PGY1, PGY2 and PGY3 years, each resident has the option to participate in off-site and/or away electives.
Are there other residencies at Englewood Hospital?
Yes, Englewood Hospital Internal Medicine residents frequently interact with residents from other programs.
- Podiatry, Dental and Pharmacy residency programs based at Englewood Hospital.
- General surgery residents from Hackensack UMC-Palisades.
- Anesthesiology residents from Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) rotate in the medical surgical intensive care unit (MSICU)
- Emergency medicine residents from Hackensack University Medical Center rotate in the Emergency Department.
Are there opportunities to work with and mentor medical students?
Yes, we sponsor MSIII Internal Medicine students from Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine. We also host MSIV students from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons who are completing their sub-internships.
Does Englewood have subspecialty fellowship programs?
No, we do not sponsor any fellowship programs. This means that our residents have the opportunity to work one on one with subspecialty attendings during elective rotations. Procedures are directly supervised by subspecialty attendings. A lack of fellowships has not adversely affected our resident’s ability to secure competitive fellowship positions.
How are residents evaluated?
Resident performance is closely monitored and evaluated in numerous ways.
- Faculty members directly observe residents providing patient care and provide timely and constructive feedback based on these sessions.
- Residents receive verbal and written feedback at the end of each clinical rotation.
- All residents take the annual In-Training Examination administered by the American College of Physicians.
- In-patient and out-patient charts are reviewed for quality using standard criteria.
- The program faculty members meet with residents twice a year (or more as needed) to provide mentoring and feedback on performance.
- The Department of Medicine’s Clinical Competence Committee monitors resident performance on a quarterly basis.
How do residents evaluate the program?
There are a number of ways residents can evaluate the program.
Our program boasts a culture of openness and transparency—we have always had and will continue to promote an “open door policy” where all faculty members are available to address concerns in a confidential manner.
Each resident is also able to anonymously evaluate their peers, faculty and specific program rotations.
We encourage our residents to share their problems or concerns with their Program Evaluation Committee (PEC) representative. The PEC is a great forum to discuss issues in an open manner and has led to many of our curricular improvements.
Residents have the option to discuss any issues with the resident representatives of the Englewood Hospital Medical Education committee and the Hackensack Meridian Health Graduate Medical Education Committee.
What types of research opportunities and resources are available?
Englewood Health provides a range of research opportunities. We have an active institutional review board, and residents work with faculty members on both investigator- and sponsor-initiated research projects. We also have a consulting statistician on staff to help with project development and data interpretation. For residents with a limited research background, our Research curriculum helps with the development of foundational skills and research workshops held through each academic year create a safe space to brainstorm, obtain feedback on ongoing projects and learn from others. Many of our residents also participate in projects led by our subspecialists. We have also expanded our research curriculum to include large database research, creating another avenue for our residents to expand their scholarly profiles.
All residents are encouraged to participate in scholarly activity regardless of their post-graduate plans. To aid in their efforts, residents are provided schedule accommodation to participate in regional/national conferences and compensation for first-author poster/abstract presentations.
How do the Englewood Hospital facilities and staff support patient care services?
Englewood Hospital is a modern hospital with up-to-date technology, such as:
- Renovated inpatient floors with a new, state of the art ICU
- 24/7 phlebotomy, respiratory therapy and patient transport services
- Highly qualified nursing staff
- Skilled social workers and care coordinators on each floor to assist with discharge planning
- A full range of imaging modalities
- Computerized medical information systems through EPIC
- Access to Dragon dictation software to assist with documentation
- Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology labs
- Endoscopy and Bronchoscopy suite
- Cardiac/Medical/Surgical ICU with 24-hour intensivist supervision, multidisciplinary rounds, and specialized training in management of Impella heart pumps, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and severe anemia in patients for whom blood transfusions are not an option
- Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center
- Graf Center for Integrative Medicine, offering services in acupuncture, massage, nutrition counseling and private yoga and meditation classes for patients and employees
- Shirvan Family Live Well Center, focusing on promoting the health and wellness of the Englewood community through education and hands-on experiences
- Modern dining amenities, including coffee from Starbucks
Is there hospital housing?
The hospital does not provide housing, but the salary is competitive with other Northeast programs and sufficient for residents to pay for their housing and living expenses.
Some residents live within walking distance from the hospital; others choose more distant neighborhoods accessible by car or public transportation. Although one should always be cautious, the hospital neighborhood is safe and security within the hospital is excellent.
What are the salary and benefits packages?
Englewood Hospital offers competitive salaries and benefits including Health and Dental Insurance. Residents also have a yearly educational allowance to purchase textbooks, journals and digital educational resources. In addition to this, residents are also allotted free parking, funds to cover meals while on core inpatient rotations and employee discounts for entertainment.
