First Family of Hip-Hop Star and WWII Veteran honored at Englewood Hospital’s Heart & Soul Music Fest

The and Heart & Soul Music Fest Community Leadership Award was presented to Teaneck resident Austin Powlis, a 92-year-old veteran, cardiac patient, and recipient of the WWII French Legion Medal of Honour.

February 24, 2017 — Englewood Hospital and Medical Center recently hosted its 9th annual “Heart and Soul Music Fest” in celebration of American Heart Month and Black History Month.

The event drew hundreds from the community and was created to celebrate the African-American heritage while also raising awareness of heart health issues in the African-American community. The crowd enjoyed an evening of education and entertainment, including a buffet dinner of soul food, a brief presentation from Englewood Hospital and Medical Center cardiologist Dr. Duane Bryan, and gospel, R&B, jazz and hip-hop performances. Entertainers included radio personality Liz Black, DJ Mitch, Status IV, Dave James, and Ray Blue. The event honored 92-year-old veteran and cardiac patient, Austin Powlis, of Teaneck, who is a recipient of the WWII French Legion Medal of Honour, and music mogul Leland Robinson, Sr.
