Michael T. Harris, MD, Appointed Chief Medical Officer at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center

February 21, 2014 – Englewood Hospital and Medical Center (EHMC) is proud to announce the appointment of Michael T. Harris, MD, to the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, following an extensive year-long search conducted by a national firm.

“Dr. Harris is a key addition to our executive leadership team,” said Warren Geller, President and CEO of EHMC. “His extensive clinical and administrative experience will be instrumental to our Medical Center during an extremely transformative time, as we expand multiple services, including oncology care. Dr. Harris’ role as a leader and innovator in healthcare will be critical as we move forward to build on EHMC’s reputation of medical excellence and safe, high-quality care.”

Dr. Harris most recently served as EHMC’s Chief of Surgery and Surgical Services, when he first joined the Medical Center’s leadership team in 2012. He has been responsible for the overall operation and oversight of inpatient and outpatient operating rooms and the areas of General Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Podiatric Surgery, Breast Surgery and Pediatric Surgery, comprising more than 70 surgeons.

Dr. Harris was recruited from The Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, where he distinguished himself in a variety of clinical, administrative and academic roles, including Vice Chairman of the school’s Department of Surgery and President of the hospital’s Medical Board. He had been an Attending Surgeon at Mount Sinai since 1993.

Dr. Harris is a nationally recognized expert in the field of gastrointestinal surgery, particularly in advanced reconstructive surgical techniques for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis. He helped pioneer the use of minimally-invasive surgical techniques for both diseases and has one of the single, largest IBD practices in the nation.

In his new role, Dr. Harris will work closely with medical staff, executive leadership, the Board of Trustees and nursing leadership to foster growth and ensure continued excellence across all clinical services at EHMC. He will continue to provide surgical care to patients with IBD and colorectal cancer.

In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Harris has a well-earned reputation as a staunch and tireless advocate for patients and for his fellow physicians. He is author of the book Excellence with an Edge and the 2009 recipient of the Studer Group’s National Leadership in Medicine Award.
